Regional Champs 2015

Last weekend, the Atlanta Junior Rowing Association competed at the 2015 USRowing Southeast Regional Championship regatta, and brought home five regional championships. The Southeast region is made up of teams coming from Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina, and over 350 crews raced for regional recognition.

AJRA crews competed at a very high level, with 12 out of 16 boats advancing to the finals, 8 crews bringing home medals, and finishing third as a club in the Overall Team Points competition.

Regional Champions: Women’s Under-17 8+, Men’s 2nd Varsity 8+, Women’s 2nd Varsity 8+, Men’s 3rd Varsity 8+, Women’s 3rd Varsity 8+

Bronze Medalists: Men’s Varsity 8+, Women’s Varsity 8+, Men’s Novice 4+

Additionally, with their third-place finish, both the men’s and women’s Varsity 8+’s earned bids to compete at the USRowing Youth National Championship, held in June in Sarasota, Florida.

Congratulations to the 12 AJRA seniors who have committed to row at prestigious college crew programs.


The five members of AJRA’s Varsity Women’s squad who were recruited are: Kathryn Cosgrove (Johns Creek High School) University of Tennessee; Caroline Denny (Pace) Trinity College; Annie Martin (Marietta HS) University of Tulsa; Hayley Liebenow (Johns Creek HS) Wellesley College; and McKenzie Parks, coxswain (Westminster) Harvard University.

Seven members of the Varsity Men’s squad will row on highly ranked college teams:  Sarah Bower, coxswain (Blessed Trinity) University of Louisville; Chandler Boyd (Riverwood HS) Oregon State University; Joe Cecil (Johns Creek HS) Georgetown University; Evan Ketcham (Alpharetta HS) St. Lawrence University; Henry Llorens (Westminster) Trinity College; Hunter Smith (Wheeler HS) Oregon State University; and Jack Tucker (Westminster) Cornell University.

Parents and Rowers:

Do you have friends looking for a new sport?  Tell them to attend AJRA’s Open House on May 16 and learn about the Olympic sport of rowing!

WHAT: Come tour the AJRA boathouse, get into a rowing shell, learn basic technique, watch race footage, try out land training equipment, find out about collegiate rowing opportunities, and more!

Current coaches, rowers, and parents will be on hand to answer questions, talk about practices and competitions, and show you the basics of the sport. We will also have information about our summer camps and fall programs, including rowing for both high school and middle school students.

WHEN: Saturday, May 16th 9:00am – 12:00pm

WHO: Interested rowers (co-ed), ages 12-18 – no experience necessary! Parents also welcome.

WHERE: AJRA Boathouse – next to Roswell River Landing at 245 Azalea Drive Roswell, GA 30075
