AJRA has partnered with USRowing for National Learn to Row Day, held this year on Saturday, June 4th. Current rowers and coaches will be on hand to give interested rowers a quick introduction to the sport, to the rowing community in Atlanta, and to AJRA itself. We will have erg demos, boathouse tours, and weather permitting, on-the-water introductory sessions.

No experience is needed to for National Learn to Row Day! AJRA is a youth organization (ages 12-18), but will have doors open for interested rowers of all ages on June 4th, with information available about all rowing programs on the Chattahoochee, including options for youth and for adults.

Please sign up ahead of time to stay up to date with NLTRD info. There is no charge for participation.

Can’t make it on June 4th? Come to AJRA’s Open House on May 21st instead! We will have a very similar program offered, with specific information about AJRA summer programs. Sign up for the Open House here!

Making Gains in Gainesville

Sunday, March 20th, AJRA competed at the 30th annual John Hunter Regatta, held on the 1996 Olympic rowing course in Gainesville, Georgia. AJRA rowers jumped into the spring racing season with style, with 31 top-3 medal finishers of a possible 37 entries, including 19 gold medals.

Unlike many previous years at John Hunter, the weather was great for the first spring regatta, with lots of sun, cool temperatures, and low winds, providing great racing conditions for all squads. Many AJRA families and friends also made the trek to Gainesville, making for an extra-loud cheering section.

Both head coaches expressed pride in not only race results, but in the attitudes of their athletes. “I was very happy with how our men and women conducted themselves this weekend,” said Rob Canavan, Men’s Head Coach. “They executed the race plan, pulled hard, and gave a great effort.”

Jordan Smith, Women’s Head Coach, added, “The junior women showed some early speed and depth at this year’s John Hunter. Early discussions of making every rower count and making sure that the tone of the program factors into each boat are becoming a reality.”

Tuesday, March 15th, the Georgia House of Representatives recognized AJRA with a House Resolution commending the success of the program over our 28-year history, and our results at the regional and national level the past few years. State Representatives Matt Dollar, Joe Wilkinson, Sharon Cooper, Sheila Jones, Betty Price, and John Carson brought forward the resolution.

Several of our senior athletes and their families attended the special event, and were recognized by the legislature. You can read a full copy of the House resolution online, and also see more pictures on our Facebook page. Many thanks to Rep. Dollar and AJRA parent Matt Campbell for organizing this event!
