AJRA Competitive Squads compete at the highest level of high school rowing, racing against many premier rowing teams in the Southeast. Men and women generally compete at the novice level for their first two seasons regardless of age, and are then eligible for the appropriate varsity squad after rowing through spring season as a novice.
Competitive rowers are subject to selection guidelines, which include positive attitude, work ethic, being a good teammate, attendance, athleticism (e.g. fitness, strength), erg scores, and rowing technique. Tryouts take place during the first two weeks of practice each season.
AJRA does not follow any public or private school schedules due to participation of rowers from throughout the metro Atlanta area. During fall and spring seasons, practices will be held during all school breaks and spring breaks.
